The University of Miami men's basketball team defeated St. Francis (NY) 71-70
in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) at New York's Madison Square Garden
for the Canes
FIRST EVER Post Season victory !
UMSHoF member Coach Bruce Hale's squad was led by UMSHoF members, Rick Barry, Wayne Beckner and Mike McCoy !
Back in the 1960's, only 16 team made the NCAA Tournament, so playing in the 12 team NIT was a reward for teams who didn't win their conference, or who were Top 25 teams, but were "on the bubble".
The win was the Canes 23rd of the year, tying the school record for most wins in a season with the 1959-60 squad.
The 1962-63 Canes would lose to eventual tournament champion Providence, 106-96, in the quarterfinal game, finishing 23-5 for the season.
