David Gil didn’t have to go far to make his name in Hurricanes Baseball history, having been a standout pitcher for Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School. Named twice to the Mizuno All-American Team, to the Baseball America All-American Team, and twice All-Dade County, Gil’s resume was just what UMSHoF&M member Coach Jim Morris was looking for in the local prospect.
Upon arrival, David did what most great Canes do: Waited his turn and refined his craft. In his first two seasons he would win 8 of 10 decisions and prepared himself for significant success
to come. As a junior in 1999, Gil backed up pitching ace and UMSHoF&M member Alex Santos by recording a perfect 12-0 season with a 3.19 earned run average, named the Division 1 Independent Pitcher of the Year. He helped The U claim their third National Championship as the Hurricanes defeated arch-rival Florida State 6-5 for the title.
Although selected by the Phillies in the seventh round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft, David returned to UM and became the senior ace of the staff. He completed a spectacular 2000 season with an 11-3 record, and a 3.19 ERA. Gil was named a Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball second-team All-American and won the team’s Ron Fraser Pitcher of the Year Award for the second time. His 119 strikeouts in 110 innings gave him 312 for his career, currently ninth in school history. His four-year record of 31 wins against just 5 defeats places him tied for 10th in career victories, and his 51 career starts is tied for eighth all-time.
Gil graduated Miami with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, majoring in Finance. He was drafted in the third round of the 2000 MLB draft (93rd overall) by the Cincinnati Reds and spent seven seasons in the minors with four different franchises, named a Double A All-Star twice and Triple A Pitcher of the Month twice. After baseball, David joined the family insurance business, Gil & Associates here in Miami. He and his wife, Maria have three children: David, Wyatt, and Francesca.
