Across more-than four decades, Rick Remmert has brought acclaim to the University of Miami. While earning his B.A. degree in journalism in 1977, Remmert interned in UM’s Sports Publicity department. But with no permanent jobs available, Rick headed home to Chicago to resume his sports writing career before returning in 1978 as Miami’s first full-time Assistant Director of Sports Information.
His responsibilities expanded to coordinating media for all women’s sports and overseeing Baseball publicity ...an assignment that would soon change his life. In the Summer of 1980, Baseball Coach and UMSHoF&M member Ron Fraser made Remmert an irresistible offer: To work with him as college baseball’s first-ever Director of Marketing and Promotions. It was a match made in Baseball Heaven. Under The Wizard of College Baseball’s inspired direction, Fraser and Remmert collaborated to set national records and lead the nation for seven consecutive years in season tickets sold, attendance, and revenue.
Opportunities called, but Rick always remained in contact with The U. His enduring friendship with Coach Fraser led UM to ask Remmert to write “Ron Fraser’s Last At-Bat” on-field retirement ceremony in 1992. Rick returned to UM in 2012 as Miami’s first Director of Alumni Programs, re-starting a long-dormant M Club to increase engagement with UM’s former players. Over 50 national championship reunions, alumni weekends, and special events have followed, including Football Ring of Honor, and Remmert was promoted to Associate Athletic Director.
An early priority was to create a permanent statue in honor and memory of Coach Ron Fraser. Remmert raised all funding, selected the sculptor, worked with the Fraser Family and sculptor to create the lifelike statue, and he wrote, produced, and directed the private and public dedication ceremonies in 2015. Another of Rick’s campus-wide projects brought back legendary Hurricanes quarterback Jim Kelly in 2014 for a popular Kelly Tough Homecoming Weekend.
In 2013, Remmert was Tapped for Iron Arrow, the Highest Honor Attained at the University of Miami.
