Born in Red Bank, N.J., Meghan Saake- Knokey grew up in Wellington, FL., before coming to the University of Miami prior to the 1999-2000 season. Saake-Knokey went on to score 1,030 points as a Hurricane, while also being known as a shutdown defender for the Canes.
The 5-10 guard started all 118 games in which she appeared, registering 3,884 minutes played in four seasons. In 2002 Meghan became the first-ever Cane named BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year, setting the program’s single-season steals record with a league-best 121 swipes. A year prior she also paced the conference with 74 steals, helping bring her to the second-most steals in Miami history with 358. The two-year team captain averaged 8.7 points, 4.3 boards, 3.0 steals and 3.4 assists for her career, finishing as one of 29 Miami Hurricanes to reach 1,000-career points. Saake-Knokey dished out 125 assists as a junior and 108 as a senior, while nabbing at least 115 rebounds per season. A dynamic guard, Meghan also blocked 95 shots, including a career-best 36 as a senior.
She would finish her career with 1,030 points after going for 2,021 just up the road at Wellington High School. In 2010 she was named an ACC Legend at the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Saake-Knokey earned her UM undergraduate bachelor’s in liberal arts, earning the Commitment to Excellence award. Meghan is an active member with Habitat for Humanity and traveled to Guatemala in 2010 to serve. Heavily involved off the court, she worked as a team leader with Relay for Life, supporting the American Cancer Society. After her time in Miami, Saake-Knokey moved to reside in Montana with her husband Jon and children Avary, Quinn and Jack.
