Riquna “Bay Bay” Williams came to The U from Pahokee, Florida where she averaged 32.5 points per game and named All-State as a senior. She chose the Hurricanes because she felt like it was being with family on her recruiting trip. The decision was a wise one for her and the Canes.
As a freshman in 2008-09, Williams showed signs of what was to come when, in only her second career start, she poured in 23 points against Clemson. She would end that campaign averaging 8.7 points per game, but started her 2009-10 sophomore season with a bang, scoring 34 points against UC-Riverside. She averaged 19.6 points that season, was named second team All-ACC, and helped the Canes advance to the WNIT. That was Miami’s first postseason appearance in 4 years and got UMSHoF&M member Coach Katie Meier her first 20-win season at UM.
Williams would team with UMSHoF&M member Shenise “Moe” Johnson to help the Canes reach new heights over their final two seasons. “Bay Bay” and “Moe” led Miami to 54 wins against just 11 losses and NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2011 and 2012. The 2010-11 Canes were ACC Regular Season Co-Champions as Riquna led the ACC in scoring, 21.7 points per game, named First Team All-ACC, and honorable mention All-American in 2011. In 2011-12, she was again named First Team All-ACC and garnered third team All- American honors. Williams and Johnson finished their final two seasons in Coral Gables with a perfect 36-0 home record.
Riquna is still fifth all-time in scoring with 2,184 points and holds numerous school records including both career field goals and three-point field goals made and attempted, and single season three-pointers made. Williams was drafted by the Tulsa Shock in the second round of the 2012 WNBA Draft (17th overall) and was named to the All-Rookie team for a season that included a then-WNBA record 51 points in a game. She was named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year (2013), a WNBA All-Star (2015) and won the WNBA Championship in 2022 with the Las Vegas Aces, where she will play this season.
