Although Kimberli was only at The U for one year, she made a tremendous impact on the program. Her ability to compete when it counted and strong desire to win separated her from her competition”, said UMSHoF&M member Coach Amy Deem. Kimberli won the 2005 NCAA titles in both the indoor and outdoor shot-put competitions, as well as winning both the 2005 ACC indoor and outdoor shot- put titles. She became just the fourth woman to win an NCAA Outdoor title with a throw of 18 meters or more.
Barrett led the Hurricane women to the sweep of the 2005 ACC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Team Championships and a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Barrett won the women’s shot put in 18.19m and placed fifth in the women’s weight throw. Barrett won the women’s hammer throw at the 2005 ACC Outdoor Championships with a school record mark of 62.20m and the women’s shot put with an ACC record of 17.95.
As of April of 2024, she still holds the UM women’s indoor school record of 18.19m in the shot-put, achieved on February 18, 2005, and the outdoor school record of 18.20m, earned on June 11, 2005. She claimed first place in 12 of 13 shot put events in 2005, with a streak of 10 straight competitions, including the two NCAA events and the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Representing her original home country of Jamaica, Barrett participated in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In 2005, Kimberli achieved a bronze medal after an 18.03m throw in the shot-put at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Nassau, Bahamas. The Gulliver Prep product is a three-time Jamaican national champion in the shot-put, in 2003, 2004 and 2005. After she transferred her citizenship to Puerto Rico, Barrett broke the Puerto Rican shot-put record on March 19, 2011, with a final throw of 16.40m at the Miami Hurricane Invitational.
