The team that Coach Ron Fraser dubbed "The Luckiest Team In America" won Miami's first ever National Championship in one of the 3 major men's sports by defeating the Wichita State Shockers 9-3 to complete an undefeated College World Series !
The Canes defeated the Shockers twice...including using ...the now famous "Grand Illusion" play...beat the Maine Black Bears twice...including a big win over future major league pitcher Billy Swift...and a 2-1 victory over the Texas Longhorns and a pitcher named Roger Clemens.
UMSHoF member Danny Smith was named CWS MVP after pitching in all 5 games, recording 3 saves, allowing only 2 runs in 9 1/3 innings with 13 strikeouts. Other UMSHoF members included Sam Sorce and his 2 wins on the mound with 4 hits, 4 runs, and 4 RBI's at the plate...Phil Lane recorded 3 Home Runs in his 7 hits with 7 RBIs and 4 runs, featuring 2 hits and 3 RBIs in the final game... Billy Wrona plated 4 RBIs with his 6 hits in the series...Doug Shields had 2 hits and 3 RBIs in the finale...and Calvin James had 2 hits and 2 RBIs in limited action for the freshman.
In addition, pitcher Mike Kasprazak recorded 2 victories...including both the "Grand Illusion" game and the Championship finale !
