Vinny Scavo has extensive experience across more than four decades as an athletic trainer and administrator at the professional, collegiate, and high school levels. Scavo is in his 19th year with the University of Miami, currently the Associate Athletics Director for Athletic Training, overseeing the healthcare of all Miami’s student-athletes.
Vinny rejoined UM’s athletic training staff as Head Football Trainer before the 2011 season and was promoted to his current position in 2015. During 2008-11, he was the Director of Sports Medicine Services and Head Athletic Trainer at UM’s Miller School of Medicine. There Scavo worked closely with Miami’s team doctors and student-athletes – relationships that continue in his current capacity. Vinny’s UM career started during 1983-87 as Head Baseball Trainer for legendary coach and UMSHoF&M member Ron Fraser, helping the Canes capture the 1985 College World Series. He also aided football and was an assistant trainer for the 1983 National Championship team.
Scavo worked with the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins organizations, earning 1994 honors as Athletic Trainer of the Year for both Minor League Baseball, and Florida State League Class A Baseball. Vinny served as Director of Sports Medicine at Health South Doctors Hospital and spent 13 years as a Head Athletic Trainer for Miami-Dade County Public Schools - at Coral Gables H.S. and Miami Southridge H.S, and later at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School. In 2006, Vinny was named the State of Florida’s High School Athletic Trainer of the Year. Scavo was Head Trainer with USA Baseball during the 1987 Pan American Games, 1991 Olympic Trials, and 1994 National Trials.
Vinny found his calling in 1979, working under the tutelage of legendary Athletic Trainer Don Fauls at Florida State, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1983. He is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and is a licensed athletic trainer. In 2014, Scavo was initiated into the Iron Arrow Society, The Highest Honor Attained at the University of Miami. Originally from Staten Island, NY, Vinny and his wife Tammy have three children – Alyssa, Alec, and Arielle – and two grandchildren, Adeline Rose Scavo and Zander James Posen.
