One of the most versatile players in the history of the University of Miami basketball program, Johnny Hemsley starred for the University of Miami during one of the peak eras in the program's history. A smooth shooting guard/forward, Hemsley helped the Hurricanes earn four consecutive appearances in post-season tournaments.
Playing for UM Sports Hall of Fame coach Leonard Hamilton, Hemsley was named a First Team All-BIG EAST player as a junior, averaging 17.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists, also selected the BIG EAST’s Most Improved Player. In an NCAA tournament game against Lafayette, Johnny hit 9-of-12 3-pointers and finished with 31 points, 2nd best in UM tournament history.
In his senior season, Hemsley stepped up his game even further, averaging 18 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists and was named a Second Team All-BIG EAST selection. Hemsley still holds career records for the Hurricanes in NCAA tournament games -- including most points scored (114), field goals attempted (85), and 3-point field goals made (23).
