Miami’s all-time leader in wins, saves, shutouts, and minutes in goal, goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo was a four-year starter for the Hurricanes who quickly solidified herself as one of the most talented and successful women’s soccer players in program history.
Alonzo made her way to Miami from Carrollton, TX, after a sensational high school career. Vikki made an immediate impact at The U as she compiled one of the most remarkable freshman campaigns ever.
She started all 22 matches in the net during the 2008 season, setting single-season UM records for shutouts (11), saves (114), goals against average (0.88), and minutes in goal (2,055). All her records set during that season outside of goals against average, still stand to this day as the best single-season marks in program history. Alonzo helped lead Miami to an overall record of 10-9-3 during the 2008 season, culminating in UM’s third all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For her outstanding play, Vikki was recognized by BuzzSoccer as a third team Freshman All-American.
Alonzo continued her stellar play during the 2009 campaign, as she started all 19 matches, earning six shutouts to become the Hurricanes’ all-time leader with 17, despite it being only her second season of competition. As a junior in 2010, Vikki started 18 of 19 matches, again leading the team in minutes played for the third consecutive season, in addition to padding her school record by posting seven more shutouts.
Alonzo concluded her collegiate career with an exceptional senior campaign, helping Miami compile an overall record of 10-8-1 and secure the program’s first ever post-season win, defeating Alabama in the First Round of the 2011 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.
Vikki left behind an incredible legacy at Miami, forever etching her name as one of the most exceptional players in school history. After earning her UM degree in sports administration, Alonzo went on to have a multi-year career playing professional soccer.
She currently resides in Austin, TX, and holds the position of Global Manager of Customer Success for Device42 Inc.
