A mainstay with Miami Football ever since enrolling as a freshman in 1998, Mike Rumph delivered a championship career in the Hurricanes secondary before returning home as a UM football staffer.
Rumph was a Freshman All-America in his debut season ahead of a breakout sophomore year that ended in All-BIG EAST honors and began a streak of 37 straight starts to cap his career. A South Florida native, Rumph helped lead the Hurricanes to the 2001 national championship as a lockdown cornerback in his final season before becoming a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers. Rumph ended his career with 167 total tackles (117 solo), four tackles for loss, two forced fumble, six interceptions and 27 PBUs. Rumph had a five-year NFL career before returning to South Florida and beginning a decorated high school coaching tenure – first as defensive coordinator at American Heritage (2011-12) before becoming head coach of the historic program for his final three seasons (2013-15).
Rumph was among the first hires to his alma mater’s coaching staff in 2016 by fellow UMSHOF inductee Mark Richt, who was named head coach in December 2015. Rumph served as cornerbacks coach for five seasons before transitioning to a role in the recruiting department, where he has shined. Rumph was inducted into the Iron Arrow Society – the highest possible honor for any member of the University of Miami community - during Homecoming week in 2025.
