Though he served only three years as head coach at his alma mater, Mark Richt helped change the trajectory of Miami Hurricanes Football for his efforts both on and off the field. Richt, who compiled a 26-13 record at the helm of Miami (including a 16-8 mark in ACC play), arrived prior to the 2016 season after a decorated 15-year head coaching tenure at the University of Georgia.
In three short years in Coral Gables, not only did Richt help lead Miami to its first ACC Coastal Division title and ACC Championship Game appearance in program history, but he also helped spearhead the program’s efforts in building the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility. Richt and his wife Katharyn donated $1 million towards the project, which galvanized Miami Football alumni to raise a collective $2 million for the facility.
Two of his three Miami teams posted top 20 finishes and all three secured bowl appearances, with the 2016 group’s win in the Russell Athletic Bowl marking UM’s first postseason victory since 2006. Richt, the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year and 2017 Walter Camp Coach of the Year, led the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record that season and an appearance in the Capital One Orange Bowl – Miami’s first 10-win season since 2003 and its first New Year’s Six bowl appearance since 2005.
Richt was named to the National Football Foundation’s Hall of Fame Class of 2003.
