A cornerstone of Miami’s storied baseball legacy, Kevin Howard’s career as a Hurricane was defined by talent, leadership, and clutch performances as he compiled one of the most consistent and respected careers in program history.
Across three standout seasons (2000-02), Howard established himself as one of the top infielders in the country. Named the 2000 College Freshman of the Year and a third team All-American overall, Howard led the 2000 team in batting average (.413), hits (90), doubles (22), and total bases (128), while placing among the top five in slugging percentage (.587), on-base percentage (.478), runs scored (50), RBI (52), triples (2), walks (29), and sacrifice bunts (4).
As a sophomore in Miami’s 2001 national championship season, Kevin had a .336 average with 84 hits, and 118 total bases, while leading the Hurricanes with 20 doubles. He hit .375 at the College World Series in Omaha, NE, where the Canes swept the field in four games and captured the school’s fourth National Championship overall, and the second in three years for head coach and UMSHoF member Jim Morris.
In his third and final season at The U in 2002, Howard hit .363 with 86 hits, 23 doubles and a career-high 12 home runs. After leaving Miami, Howard was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 5th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from UM and played professionally for a decade, with career totals of 93 home runs, 540 RBI and a .284 average.
Kevin’s love for the game naturally carried into coaching and player development. He was hitting coach/hitting coordinator for Cleveland, Director of Player Development for the New York Mets, and now is Assistant Director of Player Development for the Kansas City Royals.
Throughout his journey, Kevin Howard has remained the embodiment of Miami baseball: Tough, humble, prepared, and driven. Whether contributing the clutch hit in Coral Gables or helping shape the future of the sport off the field, his impact is lasting.
