One of college football’s top defensive ends during his time with the Miami Hurricanes, Jerome McDougle was a pass rushing force for the orange and green in his two seasons in Coral Gables. McDougle picked up a pair of first-team AFCA All-America and all-conference honors, having been selected to the All-BIG EAST top group in both his junior (2001) and senior (2002) seasons.
A native of Pompano Beach, Fla., Jerome was a finalist for the 2002 Ted Hendricks Defensive End Award after he terrorized opposing offenses. During that impressive campaign, McDougle finished with 55 tackles (seventh on the team), 16 tackles for loss and seven quarterback sacks. One of his top performances of the season included a nine-tackle, one-sack game against Boston College, when he delivered a career high and season high for stops. Jerome made his 2002 debut with eight quarterback hurries and one sack in a 41-16 win over the Florida Gators in the Swamp.
McDougle was a key contributor on a Miami defense that powered the Hurricanes to back-to-back national championship game appearances in 2001 and 2002. That included a dominant victory in the 2002 Rose Bowl following the 2001 campaign where Jerome emerged as one of the nation’s finest defensive ends as a junior.
He blossomed into a third-team All-America in his first year of Division I competition, finishing with an eye-popping 48 quarterback hurries. McDougle had 15 tackles for loss, finished with 59 tackles, and totaled seven sacks to become a household name. His best performance of the season came in a win at Virginia Tech, where Jerome swarmed the Hokies for a season-high eight tackles, four tackles for loss and three sacks – to go along with two forced fumbles and seven quarterback hurries.
McDougle, who transferred to Miami after starting his career at Hinds Community College in Mississippi, was selected in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft, where he was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 15th overall pick.
