Few pitchers in program history made a late-inning impact quite like Bryan Garcia. Over three seasons, he established himself as the premier closer in Miami history and set the standard for relief pitching at UM.
Garcia finished his career as the Hurricanes’ all-time saves leader with 43, a total that remains the benchmark for the program. His ability to control the strike zone and attack hitters in high-pressure moments made him a trusted option whenever Miami held a narrow lead.
His 2016 campaign stands among the best by a Hurricane reliever. Garcia recorded 18 saves, the second-highest total in the nation, while compiling a 2-0 record and a 1.95 ERA in 34 appearances. Across 37.0 innings, he surrendered just 25 hits, struck out 54 and limited opponents to a .184 batting average.
Garcia became the first Hurricane to earn Stopper of the Year honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was also selected as a First-Team All-American by the NCBWA, named a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist and earned All-ACC honors.
Beyond the numbers, Garcia’s reliability at the back end of the bullpen played a major role in Miami’s ACC regular-season title and its No. 3 national seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Garcia was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers (No. 175 overall) and played for the Tigers from 2019-22.
