Lenny Layland - Diving
Lenny Layland was a seven-time All-American diver for the University of Miami during his collegiate career, which spanned from 1980-84. Layland competed at UM his first three seasons from 1980-82, before redshirting the 1983 season to train for the Olympics. He would then return to Miami in 1984 to complete his collegiate career.
He originally came to Coral Gables as a heralded diver from Mission Viejo, California and the Mission Viejo Nadadores Dive Team. Also a member of the United States National Team, Layland was able to win the 1978 Junior Olympics three-meter and age group one-meter titles. He also won the 1979 Senior Outdoor Nationals prior to his arrival at Miami. During his freshman season in 1980, Layland would finish sixth in the NCAA three-meter springboard, while earning his first All-American honors.
Teammate Greg Louganis would go on to win the one and three-meter events in his final season at UM.
In 1981 as a sophomore, Layland would lead all divers after the first day of competition at the NCAA finals and would eventually finish ninth in the one-meter and fifth in the three-meter. The 10 finishes in each event allowed him to earn his second straight All-America honor.
His junior season was more of the same as Layland earned All-America honors in both the one and three-meters at the 1982 NCAA Finals. Layland would earn his fourth and fifth individual honors finishing third in the one-meter and sixth in the three-meters. During his junior campaign, Layland set a UM record by going undefeated in dual match competition in both one and three-meter events.
In his final campaign with Miami in 1984, Layland would go out like he started earning two more individual All-America honors at the NCAA Finals to give him seven for his career.
During his time at Miami, Layland also competed internationally. As a member of the U.S. National Team, he competed at the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Trials. Layland finished third in the 10-meter platform at the U.S. Indoor Nationals in 1983. He finished fourth in the 10-meter platform at the 1981 World Games. |
